The new rule, which will take effect in this week’s games, still allows players with some fleeting concussion symptoms to return to games. The signs of concussion include somatic (headache), cognitive (fogginess), emotional (moodiness), physical (nausea/vomiting), and behavioral (irritability). A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull.
The injury can cause the brain to have trouble working normally for a short time. Signs of a more severe injury may appear later-on and require emergency medical care. A running back gets hit hard by a linebacker during a high school football game. Repeated injury to the brain can lead to swelling, and sometimes people develop long-term disabilities, or even die, as a result of serious head injuries.
